In Greater New Orleans, sports are a part of life. As one of the state’s largest cities, New Orleans supports a number of professional athletic teams. From the Saints and Pelicans to the Zephyrs and VooDoo, there is a game for every season, supplying New Orleans sports fans with football, basketball and baseball action.

At the close of the college football season, New Orleans hosts three special events: the Bayou Classic between in-state rivals Southern University and Grambling State, the New Orleans Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. Attracting thousands of fans, the games are high-profile events for the city, its residents, and New Orleans sports fans alike.

In New Orleans, high school sports have a sizable following as well. The city is also home to some of Louisiana’s top school athletic programs. The state football championships are held each year in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and fans from across the state travel to Greater New Orleans to cheer on their teams.

Athletic leagues for adults and children, including football, soccer, softball and basketball, are also offered in abundance. New Orleans has a sizable running community and features a number of races and walks throughout the year that attract more than 20,000 participants annually. Golf courses can be found throughout the region, from public courses like the Joseph M. Bartholomew Municipal Golf Course to private clubs like Chateau Estates Golf and Country Club.
