View All Higher Ed

Xavier University is a private, liberal arts college with the distinction of being the only Roman Catholic, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation. U.S. News & World Report ranked Xavier among the top ten HBCUs, and Fiske Guide to Colleges recognized it as a “Best Buy School” for affordability in 2014.

Many Xavier students choose scientific courses of study to prepare them for careers in medicine. The university stands out for its placement of pre-med students into medical schools, and is No. 1 in the country for educating the most African Americans who complete medical degrees.

The university’s strong science-related departments are complemented by liberal arts. All undergraduates, no matter their major, must complete an extensive core curriculum of studies in the humanities, including literature, philosophy and foreign languages.

Xavier also offers numerous student organizations, including Student Government Association, a variety of multiple professional and social Greek organizations as well as a number of honor societies. The university is committed to professionalism and excelling in academia, especially for students seeking to enter into the medical field, which is underscored by the abundance of honor societies and professional organization on campus.
