Southeastern Educates Future Teachers and Business Leaders

View All Higher Ed

Southeastern Louisiana University, part of the Louisiana State University System, is located in Hammond, about an hour’s drive from New Orleans. Southeastern manages to keep class sizes relatively small, with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 20:1.

While the majority of the student population resides off campus and commutes to classes, Southeastern offers dormitory housing and a university atmosphere with several Greek organizations and a student union that opened in 2014.

More than 90 percent of Southeastern’s students are undergraduates, and more than a third choose business or accounting majors. Education programs are also popular and offer majors for early-childhood, middle school and special education. Nursing students can pursue either undergraduate or graduate degrees, and the nursing program has a Baton Rouge satellite.

The on-campus television station Southeastern Channel is where hands-on experience complements traditional coursework for communications majors. The station produces over 100 hours of original programming each week, airs on national cable channels and has won 11 Emmy Awards.

Encompassing 16 NCAA Division 1 varsity teams, the athletics department supports football, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball. Southeastern also supports Hammond’s cultural scene by operating a historic theatre for the performing arts, a contemporary art gallery and a community music school. In addition, many university resources are available to Hammond’s small business community.
