BACK TO Public Schools

Destrehan High School is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Technology, arts and accelerated programs for honors students are areas of excellence at this 8th-through-12th-grade school. Functioning as a showcase for the school’s standout vocational training, the campus is furnished with custom carpentry built by Destrehan students; picnic tables, an outdoor deck and the Wildcats Banquet Room were all created on site. The school’s vocational program also includes courses in computer electronics, welding and television production.

Students in each grade at Destrehan High School can take honors courses in English, math, science and social studies. They can also extend their education beyond the fundamentals through electives such as creative writing, film literacy, sports medicine and music. Advanced Placement courses are offered in:

  • Biology
  • Calculus
  • Computer science
  • English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Studio art

A highlight of campus life is the weeklong “Shakespeareance.” Sponsored by the English department, the activities celebrate Shakespeare and the Renaissance era with students and faculty dressing in costume, performing plays, playing games and eating food from the period.

Extracurricular activities such as Future Teachers of America, the Kitty Hawk Air Society, drill team, color guard, cheerleading, art club, drama club and robotics are also available to Destrehan students. The athletic program sponsors the powerhouse Wildcats football team, which has won five state championships.
