BACK TO Charter Schools

Lusher Charter School is a kindergarten-through-12th-grade, arts-focused, public charter school located in Uptown New Orleans. Known for its outstanding visual and performing arts program, Lusher students perform at prestigious venues across the country, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In 2014-15, Lusher received an A rating from the Louisiana Department of Education.

Elementary coursework in reading, math and science is reinforced through integrated classroom technology and frequent field trips. The middle school curriculum at Lusher Charter School builds on fundamental skills and knowledge with a strong focus on literacy in all subject areas.

Lusher offers Advanced Placement courses and a dual-enrollment program, allowing students to take college courses at nearby Tulane University. In addition, high school students can choose from one of two academic pathways. They can select a concentration composed of at least four elective courses from an area of focus: math and science, or humanities and communication. Alternately, they can opt to earn a Certificate of Artistry by taking courses in creative writing, dance, theater or visual and media arts. The Lusher Charter School Scholars Program presents an additional opportunity for high-achieving students to earn a diploma of distinction upon graduation provided they complete a requisite series of Advanced Placement courses.

Activities outside the classroom present an abundance of ways for students to develop their individual interests. A quiz bowl team specializing in World War II history, culinary club, film and philosophy club, science fiction club and an urban-farming club are among Lusher’s varied offerings. Athletes at Lusher have their choice of 26 different sports teams, ranging from football, basketball and soccer in the fall, to swimming, tennis and baseball in the spring.
