BACK TO Charter Schools

A New Orleans magnet charter school, Benjamin Franklin High School regularly appears near the top of national rankings for the best American high schools. According to a 2014 U.S. News & World Report, 95 percent of Ben Franklin students are proficient in English and algebra and 94 percent participate in its extensive Advanced Placement courses. Ben Franklin has received an A rating from the Louisiana Department of Education for 2014-15. Located on the campus of the University of New Orleans, the 9th-through-12th-grade school produced 25 National Merit Scholar semifinalists in 2014.

The Benjamin Franklin High School curriculum encompasses a college-preparatory track and 20 Advanced Placement courses. Electives include studio art, creative writing, music appreciation and theater. Students can choose from five foreign languages — French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Latin — or enroll concurrently in college-level courses offered at nearby universities, as well as the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the regional, pre-professional arts training center.

The Ben Franklin Falcons have won regional and state championships in soccer, swimming and tennis. Students can choose to participate in more than 30 school clubs, with organizations focused on environmental conservation, art, biology, Chinese culture, culinary arts, film appreciation and robotics.
