Broadway and Ballet at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts

View All Arts & Music

Named for the world-famous New Orleans opera singer, the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts is a historic landmark for performances, including musical theater, ballet and concerts from opera to contemporary music. A cultural center for the city, the theater occupies a piece of land in Armstrong Park that has housed a theater since 1919. After undergoing a $22 million renovation, the 2,100-seat theater building re-opened in 2009 with a modern, upgraded design, surrounded by elegant plaza fountains and statues of jazz legends, and a theater lobby adorned by a massive crystal chandelier with colorful LED lighting.

Past performances featured at the theater include:

  • Joffrey Ballet
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Les Miserables
  • The Lion King
  • Martha Graham Dance Company
  • Randy Newman accompanied by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra

The theater provides residents with a dedicated venue for the area to host a variety of performances throughout the year, such as those offered by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Orleans Ballet Association, the New Orleans Opera Association and Broadway Across America productions.
