Ancient Music and Art at St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary

View All Arts & Music

St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary College in St. Benedict is composed of 1,200 acres that include the Abbey Church and Monks’ Refectory. The monastery hosts year-round performances, including French organ concerts in the Abbey Church and piano concerts in Benet Hall. It also hosts New Orleans Musica da Camera, which is an ensemble that produces music from the 10th through 16th centuries using period instruments to recreate medieval songs and chants.

Through its Abbey Art Works program, the monastery provides private art lessons and regular classes in painting and drawing for beginners and accomplished artists. The program also focuses on exploring the link between art and religion. Art admirers can tour the original 1947 murals in the Abbey, and visitors from around the world often visit the final resting place of famous American writer and philosopher Walker Percy.
