Southeast Louisiana offers a broad range of high-quality options for kindergarten-through-12th-grade education at public, private and charter schools.
Louisiana is a leader in utilizing the charter school model. A Stanford University study noted Louisiana ranks near the top of the nation in student achievement at charter schools. New Orleans in particular has led the charter school movement and, starting in 2014-15, all public schools in the city have implemented the charter model.
Charter schools in New Orleans offer facilities that specialize in arts, science and vocational programs that range from culinary arts and computer applications to architectural drafting. Graduates of top area charter schools include National Merit Scholar finalists who gain admission to the most competitive colleges and universities in the nation, and several New Orleans charter schools have been nationally recognized for academic excellence and outstanding student achievement.
While many New Orleans residents opt to take advantage of the region’s top charter school offerings, others send their children to more traditional schools at some of the state’s top-performing public schools. Residents of St. Tammany and St. Charles Parishes have a variety of strong education programs that offer an array of Advancement Placement courses, championship sports teams and gifted and talented arts, music and science tracks. The region is home to a number of A-rated public high schools that have produced students who have won summer scholarships to study engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and were named to state and national honor choir and bands.
Parents who choose to send their children to private schools can consider the region’s many highly-regarded private and parochial schools that vary in size and area of academic focus. Options range from an all-boys Roman Catholic school that celebrates core values to a Christian campus with a national reputation as a football powerhouse.
